WHAT IS DISTANCE EDUCATION?


Distance education is an educational system which enables lecturers to perform lessons based on internet and computer. Within this system, both students and lecturers share a learning environment that provides interactive communication without a necessity of a formal space, such as a class.

What is required to be a student and matriculation?

To be a student, basically you must take student placement examination. After that, you must follow the legal procedures required via ÖSYM (Centre of Student Selection and Placement). If you fulfill the conditions for placement, you may matriculate by following instructions of Mersin University which are announced annually and to be done between certain dates. In following semesters, you can make your renewal registration after paying the school fee, via web site of University of Mersin. The Fee for Distance Education & Matriculation Procedure

The students of Vocational High School of Mersin are to pay both tuition fee which is announced annually by the government and the fee for course materials that determined and announced by Mersin University. In the process of calculation of the fee for course materials, the sum which are determined in accordance with the Law 2547 are taken as a basis. The fee for course materials means a contribution for the costs of any kind of all materials printed, published and/or produced for educational purposes of universities and institutions. Current expenditures that require such a fee which is spent for educational facilities, and the amount of the fee is announced at the beginning pf every semester. The fee must be paid in the bank announced by the directorship of Vocational High School of Mersin. Since renewal of registrations are done on the web, there is no need to travel to Mersin for individual application.



How to access via internet and how to join in lessons?

After matriculation procedures completed, you will be provided with user name & password to use for connecting to UEYS (Management Portal of Distance Education). UEYS is the basic web environment where all of your educational facilities are performed. In order to join and use that system, a computer with internet connection is required.



How to manage the UEYS?

Via the portal of UEYS, you will be able to join online courses and chat with your lecturers and supervisors, follow announcements made by your lecturers and supervisors, access to your course materials, take your midterm exams and download term papers, follow your marks. You can also access all announcements about courses, papers, materials, exams, instructions,...etc. through UEYS. You can contact with instructors to consult on your problems or questions both synchronically and asynchronously, chat with other students simultaneously. In other words, all you need for distance educational activities may be done through UEYS.



How to manage courses?

Online access is possible to your courses and materials via UEYS. You will be able to join courses by clicking on related icons on the COURSES menu.



How the system for exams   work?

Only midterm exams are done via UEYS. That means, you can take midterm exams online via a computer connected to the internet, at home or anywhere you will. When you log in UEYS by your user name and password given, the menu of courses and exams will be displayed to choose and click on. At the period of midterm exams, you will get the chance of adjusting the time of exam and determining your own exam program. That's why there is no need to make an appointment for exams.

Final Examinations are hold as live-test and you are to take live-tests in classrooms in campus of Mersin University where will be announced via UEYS. In order to make the timing process easier, final exams are hold on saturdays and sundays at the end of semesters. After final exams within 2 weeks, Repeat Examinations are hold periodically.



Practical Training

As a national implementation, the internship or training course are obligatory in all vocational high schools in Turkey. In the system of distance education of Mersin University, a period of business month is required for internship. The students who did not her/his internship can not be graduated.

Those who certified that worked for any company or public institution fewest for a year, will be exempt from the obligation of practical trainingi if his employment area corresponds to educational department.



Lateral & Vertical Transfers

Vertical transfer examinations are hold by ÖSYM for the graduates from vocational high schools, in order to determine the eligibility for undegraduate education programs. For detailed information about that, please visit: http://www.osym.gov.tr

Before the beginning of Fall semester of every year, quotas of lateral transfers are reported to the Rectorate by the board of high school, then to be declared by YÖK. In the application process of lateral transfer, it is must be determined that formerly graduation's courses' compatible with present school's curriculum, by the head of department. Whole the application procedure is to be done within two weeks of each semesters' beginnig period..


Course Exemptions

For those who attended an associate or undergraduate degree of any university before distance education experience, if their former courses are compatible with current department's curriculum, may be exempt from taking same courses again. In order to avail, you are to submit a petition at the beginning of semester within 5 days, with the documents certifying former transcripts and course contents.
